I started in the late 80's in a small country in the Middle East called Bahrain.
I find that the best way to be hired for an event is by word of mouth. There are plenty of non-club based events, such as weddings or private parties, that require the services of a Dj. This is how I am hired for a majority of my performances, even for large corporations. Nothing is better than a friend vouching for you as a quality Dj. What is my real name?
Chester Lopes and I trade under the name MMWMM which stands for Making Memories with My Music.
What kind of music do you play?
It depends on the event that I'm playing for. I believe that you should try and play the requests of the guests as they are paying for my services.
How long have you been a Dj?
The last time I counted it was 21 years, which started in Bahrain. Thanks to a good friend Oliver W James who is a Dj as well and now lives in Canada. He was the one that taught me the basic art of mixing and so on. Now after a well deserved break I have decided to start again here in New Zealand.
Why did you get into Dj'ing?
It was inevitable - my love of music and spending most of my nights around friends who are Dj's in night clubs.
How would your compare the Dj'ing scene in Bahrain and New Zealand.
It is like chalk and cheese. New Zealand is a very competitive market. Here in NZ we have our local charts and music for Djs is available in abundance. Where as in Bahrain I had my own clientele (Ramada Hotel, Hilton Hotel, Hard Rock etc.) and had been doing it for so long that was well grounded. Availability of music was a mission as I used to rely on airline crew.
Do you remember your first gig?
Yes I do. It was a Halloween function, which was house full at the Plaza Hotel in Bahrain. This was more than 15y ears ago. The only reason I remember it is because some of my gear got stolen.
Do your read the crowd or do you put something together beforehand?
There is nothing like being prepared. But I get a feel for the crowd always! The crowd gets what they paid for, always.
What has been your best Dj'ing experience?
There are so many but to name a few, one was playing at the Hard Rock, Bahrain. Second was having the opportunity to play with some of Bahrain's famous Dj's like Damian D'Costa and Ahmed Al Kenna.
Have you always been musically influenced?
Hell yea! I grew up learning to play the bass guitar. I can remember it like it was yesterday. The first time I played in a Band I sang the song Innocent Man by Billy Joel.
Any tips for people asking Djs for requests?
Always give the Dj a couple of song options rather than just one. Try and request a song that will go with the beat that is being played as you will have a better chance it it being played immediately.
How did you come up with the your catch phrase "Making Memories With My Music"?
For that I have to give credit to a very close friend Sunny Fernendes. We have done numerous shows together and he is one of the best MC/ Comperes that I have played with.
FAQ:
Will you play song requests from our guests?
Yes, but please understand that some songs will not be played if it does not feel correct for the type of environment and the type of event - for example I wouldn't play "Rage Against The Machine" at your Grandfathers 80th birthday. I have a pretty good sense of what songs will work and what time would be most appropriate to play them. I'm governed by the dance floor. If I feel that other people won't like or wouldn't perhaps dance to the song you have chosen, it will either be played at a more appropriate time or not at all. I have to use my judgement to be able play to a crowd as whole and not just individual guests.
How should I go about compiling a repertoire list?
As a rule it is better to request a core of, say, 15-20 songs, and let me use my expertise to compile the rest of the music list. Although you can specify every song, bear in mind that this gives me no flexibility if your guests don't dance to the songs you like. I guarantee to play your requests, provided they are currently available in NZ.
The venue has their own resident Dj, why should I use you?
Some venues have a 'Resident Dj' who they try to insist that their clients use and this can be a big risk. Even some of the supposedly high-end venues just book the cheapest Dj they can find regardless of quality or performance, then charge double or triple that cost to you! But more importantly your function is still not as successful as you hoped. Of course some hotels have excellent Resident Djs but why take the risk of not meeting or discussing your requirements with someone before your special day. Don't be pushed into having who the venue want - it's your event - you should have that choice!
What equipment will tou use?
This depends on the package booked - appropriate sound, lighting and video equipment will be supplied to you at the venue.
When do we need to make payments?
I ask for a 50 percent deposit of the package price. The balance is not actually due until the day of your function, although many clients find it more convenient to pay the balance a week or two beforehand.
I'd like you to go on a bit longer than we booked you for... what do we have to do?
So long as the venue operators don't mind and will allow it, then this is not a problem. Please take into account bars and venues have liquor and entertainment licenses with strict guidelines to work to. If there is no problem then just let the presenter or one of the event team know before the end (or near the end) of the event. Overtime will be charged at a fixed agreed rate per hour or part thereof. Please understand if the venue is found to be in breach of licensing laws, I'm not held responsible for their actions.
How long does it take your crew to set-up and when do you need access to the building?
I can take a minimum 60 minutes to set up, this depends on the type of package, the access to the building and of course other factors such as if there is more than one act on at the event. I ask for access at least 1 hour before the start of the event or before your guests arrive. Extra time is sometimes needed for equipment and safety checks. Please understand if you have a band or another artist as well as ourselves they will usually pack up and leave before a disco does so ideally we would like to be the first to set up as we are the last to leave.
How many "watts" is your sound system?
Sadly this is something the HiFi world needs to get to grips with. People always seem to think bigger or more watts = louder, and this is not the case. Watts just means the sound will carry more clarity over a greater distance which isn't particularly needed in an enclosed space. We make sure our system is of a high quality to start with. For a pub or hotel room the number of "watts" is usually unimportant once you run over 200watts as the clarity will be there all the time if the equipment is set up right, if you are holding the event outdoors only then does it make any difference. Output of the speakers are 1500RMS at peak program.
I've never arranged a party before... what would you suggest is best and what advice could you give me?
If you haven't got far with your planning yet here are some basics pointers. If it is a small party, a village hall or community centre may be better option than a pub. You also have to remember children are not allowed in many pubs so check when you book if kids are allowed, especially if you are planning to invite families. Most pubs with separate function rooms will allow children. Some pubs do offer free room hire but check on this as sometimes the catch is that they supply the buffet. If you are local to us we can offer you a few suggestions. For an evening event you need to plan it so that all the food and possibly speeches are out of the way by 10.30pm at the very latest. This will give you a balance of a quiet time to chat with old friends before and during the meal/buffet with plenty of time left to dance. Also make sure if you can that your venue has access for entertainment prior to the invited guests arriving. There is nothing more unprofessional than having the Disco staff carry in equipment while your guests are arriving.
Can I afford you?
Yes. I have structured several packages in ways to bring our services within reach of most of our clients. I know that I'm the most economical in the market and I will help you and your guests in Making Memories With My Music. You be the judge.
Will you still be in business on our wedding day?
Yes I have a successful track record of many years. But this is a good question. During this recession many Dj companies have gone belly up. I frequently get calls from clients whose functions are a week or even days away and their Dj has let them down. I'll be there, you can count on me.
